Renew you with Drew - How to take care of your brown skin

Hello ladies....hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.

Today I wanted to share with you a site I discovered online that was developed by a well known dermatologist, her name is Dr. Susan Taylor. She has a private practice in Philadelphia and now has a website that you can go to get advice concerning your skin. Her site particularly is targeted for those who have brown skin...Whether you're Latino, African American, Asian, Indian or Middle-Eastern descent, our skin, hair, and nails are unique and should be treated differently when seeking skin, hair, and nail care.

When I read up on Dr. Taylor's purpose on giving us this educational site www.brownskin.net, it made me have a better understanding of how women of color should take more notice on the care of their skin. Just like any other specialty in a particular area, women and men of color should research and find a dermatologist that has well experience with treating people of color. Brown skin comes in many shades and that's part of what makes it so unique. So to all my brown skin ladies please be informed on how to maintain your beautiful skin and always remember embrace your face.

Take the time to read through Dr. Susan Taylor's site. I promise that you will be well informed.

Below are just some suggested skin care products that Dr. Taylor has to offer on her website.

Bright & Clear Acne Treatment

Lashes in a flash- Renew you with Drew

Hello ladies,

If the eyes are the gateway to your soul then Mascara is the doorway to your eyes...

Whether you are going for a natural look or an evening smokey look for your eyes, mascara is the key to making your eyes open up. I don't know about you, but I know that my eyes just feel naked without the touch of mascara.

Here are some of my favorite picks that give you different looks and special benefits.

Lash Stiletto Ultimate Length Washable Mascara: This will elongate your lashes and do what a stiletto heel would do for your legs...sexify those eyes.

For those ladies who have short, fine, and very straight lashes....try Chanel's Sculpte Cils Longeur Extreme Sculpting Mascara Extreme Length.
This mascara is great for those who have this issue...The brush is skinny so you can get from the root to the end and lengthen your lashes...plus you benefit by getting vitamins A & B to protect and coat your lashes.

Another favorite mascara of mine is L'Oreal Paris Voluminous....If you want volume then this is just what you need....This formula has been around for years and the black shade is extreme.....the brush is also fabo. You'll absolutely love it.

So ladies these are some ideas on finding the right mascara for your needs.....
Keep in mind to always embrace for face.....

You're such a Natural! - Renew you with Drew

Hello ladies....A natural and a fresh look for those who just want something simple but shows off and enhances your beauty.

Here are some suggestions... Always start out with cleansed and moisturized skin. This itself will allow your makeup to go on smoothly. Instead of using a foundation or powder...try a tinted moisturizer that will give you a radiant glow to your skin.

Cover Girl Smoothers SPF 15

Laura Mercier

Laura Geller barely there tinted moisturizer

For those Cheeks: try a cheek stain...just enough color to give you that fresh and rosy look. A little goes a long way smooth outward with your finger tips and apply on the apples of your cheeks and stroke upwards.

Your lip color should be neutral and try to find a color that blends well with your lip color.

Here are some suggestions:

Sephora Maniac Mat Long-Wearing Matte Lipstick

Bath & Body Works Mentha Lip Tint

For those who still like a little color on the eyes, try matted shades like the suggestions below:

Physicians Formula Mineral Wear Talc Free Mineral Eye Shadow Duo

Physicians Formula Matte Collection Quad Eye Shadow

Urban Decay Matte Eyeshadow

For those eyebrows:

Try either a powder formula or a brow marker, which is my favorite brow enhancer. Remember when applying, do it with a light stroke and not with a heavy hand.

Laura Geller Long-Lasting Color Brow Marker

Smashbox Brow Tech

Illamasqua Eye Brow Cake

Thanks Ladies please feel free to contact me with any questions at renewyouwithdrew@yahoo.com.

As always remember to embrace your face.

Drew

Renew You with Drew - Face Time

Why it is important to get facial treatments?

Hello ladies,

Today let’s talk about facial treatments. As an esthetician, I always advise my clients to be consistent in getting facial treatments by being treated at least every 4 to 6 weeks. The reason for this is because in most cases your at home skin regimen is not enough. A skin professional like myself can assist you in treating your skin by giving a thorough deep cleansing with the removal of clogged pores if needed. There are many different facial treatments that you can choose depending where you go. Your challenge is to find what's best for your skin.

The basic steps you should look for in your facial treatment are cleansing, exfoliation, extractions of comedones or milia (blackheads or whiteheads), masking, and last hydrating the skin with the appropriate moisturizer for your skin type. After your treatment, your skin should look and feel soft, hydrated and clean. These steps are great for those who are new to getting professional facial treatments. For those who do go regularly, you can certainly get upgraded or targeted type treatments that focus on specific concerns like hyper pigmentation or anti-aging. Remember that your skin concerns didn't happen overnight, it happened over a period of time. By being consistent in your treatments at home and with your esthetician, you will certainly get the results to a more beautiful you. So ladies this month I challenge you to do something different for your skin and get a treatment. Find a spa that will suit your needs and remember Embrace Your Face.

Hands down

It's that time of year again. The cold air makes your hands and nails dry as bone. So, let’s get your hands and nails geared up for this cold, wintery season.

Here are some suggestions:

* Look for products that contain lanolin, glycerin, or petrolatum. These ingredients help keep moisture in the skin.
* Try to use creams with SPF to protect from UVA & UVB Rays. The number 1 reason of showing signs of aging is the SUN.
Yes, you must protect your skin ALL year long.
* Use luke warm water when washing hands. Hot water takes away your natural oils.
* Remember Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate....only when needed. (If you have flaky, dry hands try to do this at least twice a week).
* Apply your favorite hand cream when they are moist after washing. This will allow your skin to absorb the moisture and reap all the benefits.

These “must have” treatments will keep your hands & nails moist, supple and looking young through this season and beyond.

So, ladies lets pay attention to our hands this season....keep them moisturized and protected all year and watch your hands become soft and touchable throughout this season.

Go for the Bronze!

Hola ladies,

Today I have a make up item you will love. Bronzer!

Bronzer are great for those ladies who want a splash of color & shimmer.

One of my favorite bronzers is Laura Geller's Baked Body Frosting in Sugar and Honey Glow. The great benefit in this fabulous splash of color is that you can use this on your legs and decollete as well. This is great for an air brush look. Another benefit you can get are for my ladies who have blemishes, freckles or veins that you want to cover. Just add a little water to the buff puff that comes with this wonderful product and apply it on the areas where you want cover. I promise you, you will instantly get this look like you are fresh off a magazine cover.

Another bronzer you will love is Bobbi Brown's Bronzing Powder that has a smooth and silky matte finish. This is for my ladies who just want a daytime look without all the shimmer and glitter. This product will give you that finished, natural look with the sun glow. Great for the ladies who are on the go and still want a radiant glow.

Last, I can't leave out the minerals. Bare Escentuals' "A little sun All-over Face Color". If you are looking for a little pink in your bronze then this is just what you need. This soft color gives you a kiss right from the sun. This can be used as an eye color and just on your cheeks, but if you want it all over it's great to use it around your chin, nose, and forehead.

Tip Alert - Apply on the high points of your face to give you a more natural look and of course blend, blend, blend.

See ya next week and as always remember to embrace your beautiful face.

Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate

Hello my friends,

This week let’s talk about exfoliation for the skin!

First of all what is exfoliating? This is when you use a product or a brushing machine to help remove the upper layer of dead skin cells. In return you will have a more radiant and smooth texture to your skin. There are many benefits you can get by exfoliating your skin. One benefit is to help clear away debris from the pore openings and allowing moisturizers and other treatments to penetrate into the skin deeper. This will allow you to get the most benefits from your skin products. Exfoliating is an important step in your home regimen, but for those of you who have sensitive skin that's red, irritated, thin or fragile; skin that has visible blood vessels or under a doctor’s care with medical treatments should take caution. Over exfoliating can defeat the purpose of getting the ultimate benefit and that's having radiant and smooth to touch skin.

There are two ways to exfoliate which are mechanical and chemical:

* Mechanical exfoliation is when you use granular scrubs, a brushing machine, or microdermabrasion.
* Chemical exfoliation is when you use products that have alpha-hydroxy acids, salicylic acids or beta-hydroxy acids.

These different acids will give the same benefits that mechanical exfoliation would do. Some product suggestions I have are beneficial in exfoliating:

• Neutrogena's Visibly Even foaming cleanser, this product helps with brightening your skin with essential soy and will leave your skin soft and smooth.

• Another suggestion is Dermalogica's Overnight Clearing Gel, this will treat your skin while you sleep by preventing future breakouts and relieve congestion.

• Dermalogica's Gentle Cream Exfoliant, this product has lactic and salicylic acids that will help with removing dead skin cells and speed cell renewal.

• Also to help exfoliate your skin mechanically is Dermalogica's face brush that can be used with your favorite face cleanser.

These are some of my suggestions on home treatments. Remember to also use a moisturizer as well after treating your skin. Your skin is more open to receiving the benefits of moisture after exfoliation. I also recommend to see a skin care specialist every 4-6 weeks to get the results you want in the long run...Some things need to be done with a professional in order to reap all the benefits of having radiant, soft and smooth skin.

If you would like to see me you can email me at renewyouwithdrew@yahoo.com to set up an appointment.

Before I go, as always remember to embrace your face.

Red, an ego trip for your lips.

Let's admit, red is it this season.

Now let’s discover the right shade that fits your skin tone. You can go from pink reds, brick reds, berry reds to fire engine reds.
So many choices and I know this can be overwhelming, but it really isn't for you because you got Drew.

For those ladies who have fair complexions, try going for the warmer shades like Rouge Dior Replenishing Lip color in Rouge Vadette Celebrity Red, this shade reminds me of the reds in autumn leaves.

For my medium to tan ladies, you can try anything from pink reds to berry reds. A great choice would be Chanel Hydra base Crème Lipstick in Image Rose, which is one of my favorites.

Last but not least my darker ladies, try something new in the blue...A deep blue red that is. A great choice by Too Faced Lip of Luxury in Drop Dead Red. Wanna be bold well go for a fire engine red like Max Factor’s Vivid Impact Lip color in Ms. Right Now 40.

One more tip for my girls...use a lip liner and a lip brush, it makes all the difference on getting flawless lips. A great suggestion, Too Faced has a clear lip liner called Borderline Lip Pencil that can work with any shade of lip color. This will help with bleeding lip lines and help plump those lines around the lips too.

These are just a few shade suggestions that could work for you and always remember that it's just make up, have fun with it. And always, remember to Embrace Your Face.
